The central nervous system is directly connected to the skin through efferent neurons or mediators produced in the CNS, as well as indirectly through immune cells or the adrenal glands. Skin nerves respond to endogenous stimulation from the vascular system — such as pH changes, osmotic shifts, bradykinin, cytokines — as well as to emotions (internal trigger factors).

Influence of the Autonomic Nervous System on Skin Health

An imbalance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) makes the skin more vulnerable to pathological influences.

Studies of the autonomic nervous system in patients with chronic dermatoses show changes in heart rate variability. Therefore, for example, when examining patients with hand eczema, it is recommended to assess the type of autonomic regulation in order to prescribe rational, differentiated therapy.
