VedaPulse-TES — Physiotherapy Technology for Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES)

The method of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) was developed at the I.P. Pavlov Institute of Physiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg). Its comprehensive therapeutic effect is based on stimulating the enhanced release of endogenous opioid hormones (endorphins) — often referred to as the “happiness hormones.”

TES

During the transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) procedure, the production of opioid hormones, neurohormones, and neurotransmitters (including endorphin, enkephalin, serotonin, and others) is significantly activated in the body. These substances provide a powerful analgesic effect, reduce the nervous system’s sensitivity to stress, improve mood, and help alleviate signs of stress and depression.

Neurotransmitters are responsible for transmitting signals between cells in the nervous system. Different groups of neurons combine into entire functional systems that “operate” through specific biochemical substances.

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers in the brain that transmit information from one neuron to another. They regulate essential body functions, including movement, emotional responses, and the physical ability to experience pleasure and pain.

Neurotransmitters influence mental health in several important ways: they affect mood and cognitive processes, regulate concentration and memory, control appetite centers in the brain, and help regulate sleep.

The most well-known neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation include:

  • serotonin
  • norepinephrine
  • dopamine
  • acetylcholine
  • GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)

In psychiatry and neurobiology, serotonin receives particular attention. Serotonin influences memory processes and cognitive performance, including the speed and quality of thinking. In depression, reduced serotonin transmission can lead to impaired cognitive function and slower thinking. In addition to its impact on cognition, serotonin also has a significant influence on aggressive behavior.

Transcranial electrical stimulation is a simple, safe, and highly effective procedure.

The treatment is delivered using specially designed electrical impulses transmitted through electrodes placed on the patient’s scalp to activate the brain’s protective mechanisms.

TES is performed by applying low-intensity electrical currents through electrodes secured to the patient’s head.

It has been clinically demonstrated that within 10 minutes after the start of the procedure, the concentration of opioid hormones increases:

  • 2.5 times in the brain
  • 3.5 times in cerebrospinal fluid

TES also stimulates the production of beta-endorphin, significantly increasing its concentration in both the brain and bloodstream.

This produces:

  • a relaxing effect
  • a sedative effect
  • deeper relaxation
  • easier access to transcendent meditative states

How Does VedaPulse-TES Technology Work?

TES is performed while the patient is in a comfortable position, either lying down or sitting.

The procedure uses the following electrodes:

  • one large frontal electrode
  • two small electrodes placed behind the ears

The duration of a session ranges from 15 to 60 minutes.

A treatment course may consist of 1 to 16 sessions, performed either daily or every other day.

The timing, duration, and stimulation intensity are determined individually depending on the patient’s condition and therapeutic goals.

Facilitated entry into transcendent states occurs through activation of the body’s endogenous opioid hormone production.

Main Indications

TES therapy may be used for:

  • normalization of psychophysiological status in cases of anxiety conditions and disorders due to its antidepressant and sedative effects;

  • restoration of neuroplasticity in adults aged 40+, as well as in patients recovering from traumatic brain injury or stroke;

    • spinal pain,
    • radiculitis,
    • osteochondrosis,
    • headaches,
    • postoperative pain,
    • arthrosis-related pain,
    • household injuries, and others;
  • restoration of endocrine system balance;
  • immunomodulatory support.

To date, experimental studies have demonstrated the effectiveness and therapeutic relevance of TES therapy across various medical fields.

Chronic peptic ulcer disease and other gastrointestinal disorders, their recurrent exacerbations, the need for dietary restrictions, the limited effectiveness of conventional drug therapy, and the side effects of prescribed medications inevitably contribute to the development of asthenic-depressive conditions.

TES therapy effectively helps eliminate asthenia and depression. It restores normal interactions between the brain’s regulatory centers and subordinate peripheral structures.

Recent studies have demonstrated that TES therapy enhances the eradication effect of conventional anti-Helicobacter therapy.

Research shows that:

  • ulcer healing time is reduced by 2–3.5 times
  • the cost of required treatment decreases by 3–4 times
  • the inclusion of TES therapy in comprehensive anti-Helicobacter treatment allows a 1.5–2 times reduction in the amount of anti-Helicobacter medications required

TES Therapy in Obstetrics

In obstetrics, a pathological preliminary period (the prodromal or preparatory phase before labor) is considered a serious complication in which one of the key mechanisms is autonomic imbalance, characterized by significantly elevated adrenaline and norepinephrine levels.

This condition may involve autonomic disturbances such as:

  • excessive sweating
  • sleep disturbances
  • other vegetative symptoms

It may also contribute to the development of fetal hypoxia.

When TES therapy is added to standard treatment in such cases, it has been shown to:

  • significantly reduce adrenaline and norepinephrine levels
  • increase the functional reserves of the mother’s body

Studies involving TES therapy in patients with gestosis (pregnancy-related complications / preeclampsia-related conditions) have demonstrated positive outcomes when used alongside standard treatment, including:

  • homeostatic effects
  • cytokine profile correction
  • normalization of microcirculation
  • preservation of β-endorphin levels

TES Therapy and Pyelonephritis During Pregnancy

A serious condition that may complicate pregnancy and negatively affect fetal development is pyelonephritis.

Approximately 90% of kidney damage in acute pyelonephritis is associated with the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

TES therapy can target this key pathogenic mechanism by:

  • reducing the destructive effects of pro-inflammatory cytokines on kidney tissue
  • minimizing the risk of subsequent complications

TES Therapy in Pediatrics

TES therapy is also used in pediatric practice.

Enuresis is classified as a neurogenic bladder dysfunction and manifests as a lack or loss of bladder control.

In treating this condition, the psychorelaxing and sedative effects of TES therapy are particularly valuable.

TES therapy has been shown to:

  • relieve symptoms of enuresis
  • improve academic performance
  • normalize psychophysiological responses
  • improve sleep
  • stabilize mood

Another common issue in pediatric practice is chronic constipation in children.

Studies evaluating the effect of TES therapy on chronic constipation in adolescents demonstrated high effectiveness of standard treatment when combined with TES therapy.

  • a statistically significant reduction in recurrence frequency
